This website is concerned with the part of the family which comes from Emmerich, especially from the forefather David Nieuwstad (born 1724 in Emmerich) onwards. Also, there is more information on earlier ancestors, back to Albertus Niestadt, Emmerich 1660. On this site you find a family tree, photographs, tales and links to other sites.
However, the information is not complete and could contain errors.
Several branches of the family.
Three main branches of the family seem to exist in the Netherlands.
Beside the branch described here, it seems that there are branches from Voorne Putten, Zuid Holland (including the well-known lawyer Cornelius Neostadius, 1549-1606) and Aengwirden (Friesland).
Also, there is a geneaology of a family Nieuwstadt which starts with Maggiel Nieuwstadt (1625) from Rotterdam.
Certificates from Utrecht show there is also a David Nieustadt who died in 1643. In 1696 we see a Joachim Nieustadt,in the ‘vroetschap (citycouncel) of Utregt’
There are no clear indications as to how these branches are connected.
In the branch from Emmerich this website shows three separate flows. One flow was mainly established in and around Barneveld, with a second one in the neighbourhood of Gorinchem. The third line is a branch which comes from the surroundings of Delft.
Have fun,
Jan Nieuwstad
